A high cube container is exactly one foot taller than a standard unit. That single foot changes what you can store, whether you can stand up inside, and whether a conversion is comfortable or claustrophobic. It is one of the best value decisions in the whole specification.

What makes a container high cube
Length and width are fixed by ISO 668 so that containers interlock worldwide. Height is the one external dimension with two accepted options: 8 ft 6 in for a standard unit and 9 ft 6 in for a high cube. Everything else, including the corner castings, the door width and the footprint, is identical.
High cubes are most common in 40ft, widely available in 20ft, and available but less common in 10ft. They are usually identifiable by a black and yellow striped marking along the top of the doors, added so that hauliers and crane operators do not misjudge clearances.

The important number is the thirteen per cent extra volume for the same ground footprint. If your constraint is the size of your yard rather than the height of your gateway, a high cube is free capacity.
When the extra foot pays for itself
- You are insulating and lining it. Battens, insulation and ply take three to four inches off the walls and roof. Starting from 8 ft 10 in leaves a comfortable room; starting from 7 ft 10 in leaves a low one.
- You are stacking pallets two high. Two loaded pallets frequently come to just over 7 ft 10 in. In a high cube they fit with room to lift them.
- You want to work inside it. Workshops, gyms, welfare units and offices all feel dramatically different with an extra foot above your head.
- You are storing tall items. Ladders on wall brackets, tyres on racking, tall machinery, vehicles on ramps.
- You need a taller door opening. The door aperture gains eleven inches, which is often what decides whether a forklift mast or a piece of plant will actually get in.
- You are fitting a mezzanine or overhead storage. The extra height is what makes a usable shelf above head level possible.
When a standard unit is the better buy
A high cube is not automatically the right answer. Choose standard height when the container has to pass under a low arch, gateway or canopy on the way in, when it will live under a roof or a tree line, when a planning or covenant restriction caps the height of structures, or when you are simply storing boxes and shelving and the extra volume will never be used.
Remember that delivery clearance is measured to the top of the container on the vehicle bed, so a high cube needs proportionally more overhead room on the approach as well as at the final position.
How to spot a high cube
Three quick checks. First, look for the black and yellow diagonal hazard striping along the top rail above the doors, which is the industry convention for over-height units. Second, read the CSC plate on the door: the container type code ends in a digit that identifies height, and 45G1 indicates a 40ft high cube while 42G1 indicates a 40ft standard. Third, measure the door aperture: 8 ft 5 in means high cube, 7 ft 6 in means standard.
